Jason Hanson is a retired American football player who played as a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) for 21 seasons, all for the Detroit Lions from 1992 to 2012. He was born on June 17, 1970, in Spokane, Washington, and attended Washington State University.
During his lengthy career, Hanson was considered one of the most consistent and accurate kickers in the NFL, with a career field goal success rate of 82.4 percent. He also set several records during his time with the Lions, including the franchise record for most points scored (2,150), the most career field goals (495), and the most career games played (327).
Hanson was also recognized for his accomplishments off the field, having been nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award and receiving the Ed Block Courage Award in 2003. After retiring from the NFL in 2012, Hanson has been involved in various coaching and mentoring programs and is also a key spokesperson for the NFL's campaign to promote physical fitness among children.
